The Big Bake-Off Challenge

We want bakers great and small to take part in this fun event that will celebrate the creative cookery talent of our historic minster town.

Competitive cooks need to have their mixing bowls and oven gloves at the ready this month when the Halifax Food & Drink Festival goes baking mad with its first ever cake competition.

Budding bakers are being challenged to bake their best at the Halifax Food & Drink Festival on Saturday 22 and submit a cake that is inspired by and celebrates the Festival or Halifax as a whole (it’s a piece of cake honest!)

Michay Matthews, Marketing and Events Manager at the Halifax Food & Drink Festival said: “We want bakers great and small to take part in this fun event that will celebrate the creative cookery talent of our historic minster town. It’s going to be the icing on the cake of the Festival!”

Perhaps you’d like to make a Piece Hall Parkin, a Borough Market Battenburg or a sponge in the shape of Shibden Hall? Whatever gets your creative juices (and cake batter) flowing, each Big Halifax Bake Off entrant can enter one of four categories including: ‘Summer Showstopper’, ‘Teatime Favourites’, ‘Under 12’s’ and ‘The Professionals’.

Cakes will be judged at Halifax Borough Market on Saturday June 22 by a crack team of cake experts and there will be tasty prizes for the winning cakes.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “This is a great opportunity for master chefs young and older to show off their baking skills as well as some civic pride. There’s plenty of inspiration for them around Halifax and the event promises to have some tasty competition.”

The sixth Halifax Food & Drink Festival will be abuzz with live chef demos, cookery workshops and more than 70 stalls selling lovely local morsels on Saturday June 22 (10am–5pm) and Sunday June 23 (10am–4pm). The weekend has been designed to showcase both local and global cuisine, with experts such as venison aficionado Simon Dyson, two-time Yorkshire Pudding Champion Christopher Blackburn, and renowned local chefs Lee Marshall and Ben Varley (a former contestant on the BBC's Masterchef: The Professionals).
