The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has warned of the possible effects of an imminent Local Authority Building Control Notification Purge on building owners and roofing contractors.

The NFRC has also issued advice to roofing contractors that all reportable jobs should be registered by law, and has recommended that roofing contractors become part of the ‘CompetentRoofer’ Competent Person Scheme for roofing.

The NFRC has warned that Local Authority Building Control (LABC) will be conducting a ‘purge’ on Building Control Notification in five pilot areas.

The purge which started on June 1st will run throughout the summer and will take the form of site visits to the scene of roof refurbishment work in domestic, commercial & industrial buildings.

If the purge uncovers any unregistered work, the building owner will be required to pay to ‘regularise’ the work and the roofing contractor will have to explain in writing why they are not complying with regulations.

The LABC have the authority to fine companies and review all work over the previous two years to ensure Building Regulations compliance.

The NFRC has reminded all roofing contractors of their legal obligation to register all reportable roof refurbishment work and has advised contractors who are not already part of the CompetentRoofer to join.

Paull Newsome of North Somerset based flat roofing contractor County Flat Roofing explains why they have been members of the CompetentRoofer for nearly 2 years now and what it has meant for their customers.

“As a member of the government-backed CompetentRoofer Scheme we can self-certify refurbishment work for Building Regulations. This saves the home or property owner from having to pay and wait for a building inspection to approve the work.

As a fully registered member of this Scheme which currently operates in England and Wales, all of County Flat Roofing’s domestic work automatically receives a 10 / 15 or 20 year warranty depending on the system”.

Paull also outlines some of the other customer benefits that can be delivered through County Flat Roofing’s membership of the scheme.

“Our CompetentRoofer approval means that our customers can be confident that we are up to date with Building Regulations and that their work has been and continues to be thoroughly inspected to make sure that it is compliant to a high standard. We are saving our customers money and time as well as offering them a whole new level of peace of mind and confidence that they’ve made the right decision when choosing County Flat Roofing”.
