Its associations with the past don’t seem to be dampening our desire for the metal brass and its strengths are still finding new applications in the modern age.

If it’s a yellow coloured, shiny metal we’re conditioned to make associations with value but brass has managed to keep an image of practicality that somehow makes it more dependable and steadfast than the more ‘flighty’ and fashion dependant metals that are not as widely found in our homes.

Brass is a hard copper and zinc alloy that can be polished to high shine to show off its attractive yellow colour. Its low price good looks, its re-assuringly heavy weight coupled with its many time-proven practical applications have meant that we still trust it and want it at least in a decorative capacity in our modern homes.

These are not the only reasons why there’s life in the old dog yet. An impressive set of physical properties include low friction, high conductivity, ease of casting and malleability, and great acoustic properties (think of brass instruments). These and the fact that it is a blend of less rare and more affordable metals have helped to make it so relevant to our lives in so many ways.

James Gumersell of online door handle retailer helps to explain the popularity of brass in interior design today.

“As a retailer of mainly metal goods we’ve certainly seen a trend over many years towards steel and chrome finish door handles which is line with the trend over the last decade or more in the jewellery sector where silver, and silver coloured items in a sense became the new gold. Having said, that brass is still proving to be popular. The demand for and our strong sales of brass door handles however is not just based on lower metal prices or trends. People are making a design choice – they want to see brass door handles in their home”.

James accepts that demand for the period look plays a part but points out that it is far from the whole story.

Brass door handles and door knobs do certainly look the part in period styles but more modern style brass door handles and door knobs are also still proving quite popular. Brass is a very durable material and brass door handles are very strong and substantial and they actually suit a number of looks and themes. Interestingly brass is also quite a hygienic choice because it naturally disinfects itself”.
