Lord Baker, Chair of the Baker-Dearing Educational Trust and Chairman of University Technical Colleges will be attending the event

East Reading, 19th June 2013 - UTC Reading, the new University Technical College specialising in computer science and engineering for 14 to 19 year olds opening in September 2013 will be hosting a Taster Event at Cisco’s offices, one of its industry partners next Tuesday 25th June 2013.

Cisco will open its doors to parents and students to showcase the opportunities available to young people who choose to study computing science or engineering. The aim of the event is to inform and inspire students through interactive sessions, giving a flavour of some of the activities and unique opportunities available to future students.

Lord Kenneth Wilfred Baker, Chair of the Baker-Dearing Educational Trust, Chairman of University Technical Colleges and former Conservative MP as well as a Life Member of the Tory Reform Group will be visiting the event and he will be attending this event and hosting a Q&A session with the media from 4.45pm, prior to the event.

This provides a unique opportunity to ask any questions about UTC Reading and also UTCs in general. Lord Baker will also be discussing current hot topics concerning education and the new opening of further UTC Colleges across the country.

Cisco, along with our other lead partners Microsoft, Network Rail, Peter Brett Associates and The University of Reading, will be allowing students to get involved with some fantastic activities and really experience what it would be like to attend UTC Reading.”

Cisco hosted a taster event in November last year on behalf of UTC Reading and owing to the success of this event, it is rerunning the event in June. UTC Reading lead partners, Microsoft, Network Rail, Peter Brett Associates, University of Reading and 3D printer suppliers will be attending the event showcasing the technology and some of the equipment they will implement on the UTC Reading. Some of the activities scheduled for the afternoon are cable making and hacker desk demonstration from Cisco; Windows 8 tablets with educational apps from Microsoft; model track and train detection system from Network Rail; Lego bridge challenge, K-Nex and other building materials from Peter Brett Associates, information and leaflets from University of Reading as well as 3D printer demonstrations.

UTC Reading is currently supported by Network Rail, Peter Brett Associates, Microsoft, and Cisco Systems as lead industry partners; CGI, On Systems Limited, Boxford and Agilent Technologies as industry associate partners and Reading Rugby Club as a community associate partner. New associate partners have recently joined UTC Reading: Thames Water, Denford, Autodesk and Prodigy.

The event will be held at Cisco’s premises, 200 Longwater Ave, Green Park, Reading, Berkshire, RG2 6GE from 5.30 to 7.30pm.

About UTC Reading

UTC Reading is a new University Technical College that will specialise in Computer Science and Engineering, taught alongside the national curriculum. UTC Reading opens its doors in September 2013 and will welcome girls and boys aged 14 to 19 within a 15 mile radius of Crescent Road, Reading RG1 5RQ.

The specialist curriculum proposed by UTC Reading will appeal to secondary school-aged pupils interested in Computer Science and/or Engineering, who are keen on pursuing and developing their talents in these areas.
