Styles and trends come and go for all parts of our homes, from what’s on the walls right down to the type of handles on the doors. Here’s a look at what the best dressed doors have been wearing this year.

It’s just a door handle right? Wrong….and kind of right at the same time. Your interior door handles obviously serve a practical purpose and for many people they may be a feature that would be rarely changed or replaced.

Equally true is the fact that door handles are very visible in the home, particularly to visitors to your home. As such your door handles and door knobs are a part of the supporting cast that creates and validates the design theme of a room.

The interior design trends of 2013 which have focused on the return of lacquer, glitz and shine to the home and a re-discovery of the weighty and timeless visual opulence of more colourful and ‘older’ metal finishes such as bronze and brass have brought a surge in popularity for brass door handles.

The trend of mixing selected antique furniture and ornaments with their modern counterparts and a nod to more elegant and graceful period styles and pieces have meant more good news for brass door knobs and handles in period styles. It has also meant that the new generation of colourful crystal glass door handles (optical grade these days) have found their way back into home.

In our kitchens we’ve been riding the wave of bold coloured gloss slabs, or a clean white look. It looks as though this wave has broken and is being replaced by a modern version of homely which gets its distinct feeling of comfort from retro touches, and more natural colours and finishes such as wood and slate. Door handles and cupboard door handles and knobs have therefore featured brass or cracked porcelain designs.

James Gumersell of specialist online door handle retailers sums up.

“There has certainly been a trend towards brass door handles, glass door handles and many of the other handles which have a retro or period look. The right door handle or door knob can be a really important, albeit a small part of completing a specific look or theme. The detail is important to people and that’s why we offer our customers plenty of choice and many designs that you won’t find in your typical hardware store.”
