Lucian Ivan Managing Director of Spectrum Window Cleaning, One of London’s leading window cleaning firms, was last week interviewed live-on air by LBC Radio, about his thoughts on London Mayor, Boris Johnson’s, plans to introduce a 20 mph speed limit in the capital over the next 20 years. Lucian Ivan, MD of Spectrum, was candid in his thoughts and suggested the following to Boris Johnson [London’s Mayor].

With speeds in London already low, and almost at standstill in the mornings, introducing a speed limit especially during quieter periods first thing in the morning would be counter productive. Spectrum suggested to the Mayor of London: “that if he really wants to lower the speed limit; to at least make a variable speed limit; so that early hours when there is no traffic speed limits would be normal and for rush hour speed limit would be reduced.”

The issue for many for slower than necessary speed limits is that it could affect productivity of the Capital’s working men and women. If it takes 10% longer to move personnel from site to site that is going to effect productivity, increase costs and put even more downward pressure on already heavily pressured firms.

Lucian Ivan, However is not perturbed, he goes on to comment; “These proposed changes by Boris Johnson, are designed to make the Capital a safer place to work and live for all concerned”. Lucian continues to add; “We believe in compliance to the law, and would be happy to make changes in our business if we thought that they would increase safety and help the economy but they need to be sensible.

It is clear that debate stirred emotions and a balance must be struck versus ensuring speed restrictions are considered by drivers without making the daily commute to projects even harder for many businesses servicing the capitals customers. There must also be a clear review of the added safety benefits to from changes to the speed limit, it is unknown if in practical terms a speed limit change will have any effect other than to unnecessarily constrain drivers.

Spectrum’s prominence in London is illustrated by LBC Radio’s interest. In addition, its expert use of technology has allowed them to be able to better serve their customers by being faster and cleaner, in particular via its specialist high rise abseiling services division which has a highly skilled and certified staff and focuses on the highest safety standards.
