It's worth remembering that as well as reducing wastage, using Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose voucher codes can also help keep costs down

It has long been reported that us Brits waste money on food, but more recent figures, from a number of sources, have confirmed just how much is being thrown in the bin. My Favourite Voucher Codes comments on the findings and informs consumers how they can save money on their food costs.

Just how much is being wasted?
Across the UK, households are collectively throwing away more than £10 billion(1) worth of food every single year, with the average cost per family nearing £500(1), according to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The huge amount of food waste is supported by Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), which claims around 15 million(2) tonnes of food is thrown away each year, with around half of it coming from residential homes.

WRAP claims that 7.2 million3 tonnes of food is binned each year, with 61%(3) of that being avoidable and worth £12 billion3 – equivalent to £55.95 per month, closer to £700 a year. However, despite slight variations in the figures, the message is the same.

£1 billion(1) of the food being chucked away, made up from fresh fruit and vegetables, tinned and packet produce, is within date and perfectly good to eat.

Dr Tim Fox, spokesperson for the Institute, said that the average household will bin in excess of £20,000(1) of food.

Keeping costs down
However, with budgets being squeezed from all angles, consumers are starting to look for more ways to cut back. Perhaps keeping the cost of shopping down and reducing waste will start to become a priority.

For those that are looking to cut waste and costs, it's important to understand the difference between 'best before' and 'use by' date labels on food, as well as taking advantage of smaller-sized products.

However, the way shoppers pay for their groceries could also keep the weekly cost down. Taking advantage of online deals and utilising promo codes can slash the cost of shopping baskets around the UK.

Instead of wasting money on food in times of austerity, people could be making huge savings. Here are just a few of the incredible discounts people could be taking advantage of:
• This Tesco voucher could give shoppers £15 off when they spend £60
• Save £25 off a fifth online shop with Waitrose discount vouchers
Sainsbury’s shopping vouchers are currently offering £15 off when you spend £75 and over

Julian House, founder of My Favourite Voucher Codes, commented on the figures: “It's surprising that so many consumers are throwing away valuable food when their incomes are under so much pressure. It's worth remembering that as well as reducing wastage, using Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose voucher codes can also help keep costs down.”
