London, UK – 29 October - Akamai Technologies, a leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimising and securing online content and business applications, today announced that as part of its commitment to its growing EMEA business it has made significant investments in expanding its operations across the region, including the opening of its new EMEA headquarters and UK regional office in Addlestone, UK. As part of this drive for expansion, the company also recently opened new offices in Israel (Tel Aviv), Germany (Hamburg and Dusseldorf) and Belgium (Brussels) and further strengthened its senior management team in the region covering key areas such as marketing, partner sales and product strategy.

Akamai is experiencing strong traction in its EMEA business and is therefore investing heavily to support this, both in terms of people and assets. To meet its customers’ needs, the company has more than doubled EMEA employee numbers in the last 18 months, marking an increase of 150% in personnel since the beginning of 2012.

“Today there is an unprecedented opportunity to harness the power of the hyperconnected era and accelerate innovation like never before,” explained Mark Vargo, Senior Vice President & General Manager, EMEA. “That opportunity can only be realised, however, by developing strategies that address the four key technology trends that have become imperatives for today’s entertainment and corporate businesses - mobility, media, cloud and security. These are integral to the increasing business opportunities that we’re seeing in the market and our expansion in the region is with the express purpose of capturing these opportunities and getting closer to our customers and partners here.”

“However, each of these technology trends carries its own set of challenges,” continued Vargo, “but all are essential to ensure a consistent, protected and rich experience for every user across every device wherever they are.”

To help its customers capitalize on market opportunities whilst addressing these challenges such as security, performance, latency and the need to reach users globally, Akamai has developed a suite of solutions that support businesses in all of these areas, whether for providing online video, running an e-commerce website or running global applications via the web. With its distributed Cloud Platform made out of over 141,000 servers and supporting up to 30 percent of all web traffic, Akamai is uniquely placed to enable its customers exploit the hyperconnected era in which B2B and B2C businesses are now trading.

The view of a rapid expansion for cloud-based services in Europe is supported by research from various analyst firms. Gartner predicts that, the worldwide market for public cloud services is expected to grow 18% in 2013 to $131 billion. While market dynamics vary substantially when considering the cloud services market size and market growth across the different regions of the world, Gartner lists Eastern Europe amongst the emerging markets with the highest growth rates while representing the smallest overall markets. Despite the growth challenges in the region, Western Europe remains the second-largest region in the cloud services market (behind North America) and will account for 21 percent of all new spending on cloud services from 2013 to 2017.

With companies turning to the cloud to reduce costs and increase productivity now more than ever, it is critical that their cloud apps perform to meet the demands of an increasingly global and mobile workforce.

Another trend seen by Akamai is that of the world of media & entertainment which is radically changing as the appetite for HD video continues to increase and consumers expect a high quality experience on any device, anywhere. Added to this, the market is seeing an explosion in the number of connected devices. Today, the ratio of devices to Internet users is 3:1 – and analyst predictions point to a ratio of 5:1 by 2015. But that is certainly not the end of it; Akamai predicts that by 2020 the ratio will be a 10:1 device per internet users.

Vargo concluded, “The result of so much business and entertainment moving online, and the Internet becoming so integrated into every aspect of our lives, is that security threats have become more prominent, frequent and dangerous. No longer is security just an IT issue it’s become a serious business issue. The attacks we’re seeing can literally cripple a brand and cost a company millions of dollars.”

In addition to its growing presence in the region, Akamai has also announced significant new NetAlliance partners in EMEA throughout 2012 and 2013 including Orange and Swisscom. The partnerships allow customers to access and benefit from world-class services, enabling them to more effectively embrace and conquer market and revenue opportunities both today and in the future.
