Kainos will showcase the latest version of Evolve at eHI Live on November 5-6 at Birmingham NEC, on stand D16

- The new features, already being trialled by several UK Trusts, will make it possible to identify breakthrough patterns from complete patient records compiled in real time from disparate data held in legacy case notes, GP correspondence and diverse hospital systems. This will drive powerful new insight, helping medical staff to predict and prevent emerging conditions -

London – November 4th, 2013 – Digital Technology Solutions company Kainos] has unveiled transformational new healthcare analytics capabilities in the next generation of its flagship Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution, Evolve®.

The exciting new features allow unprecedented indexing and searching of disparate and unstructured patient information. As a result clinicians and other decision-makers will be able to drill deeper into patient data and identify less obvious trends, anticipating medical conditions before symptoms have emerged. This will mean more patients can be treated in the community or at home, before conditions have escalated, with clear benefits to the patient as well as on acute care costs.

The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, one of the earliest adopters of the Evolve EMR, is running one of a number of pilot projects based around ‘Smart Indexing’. This will bring historical patient case notes to life and combine these with other structured and unstructured data such as GP correspondence and results, so that clinicians and healthcare analysts can build up a more holistic picture of a patient’s medical background.

Mike Meers, Chief Information Officer at the Trust, commented, “This is enormously exciting. It will mean we can extract valuable insight from sources that were previously unsearchable, and combine this with data from all sorts of other clinical and non-clinical systems, giving us a complete, amalgamated view of a patient all in one place. Once we have that, we can start changing the way we deliver healthcare.”

The Smart Indexing capabilities are just the first phase of Kainos’s long-term strategy to introduce advanced analytics capabilities to Evolve over the next 18-24 months. Advanced ‘medical context’-aware search capabilities will be added next, allowing clinicians to automatically identify correlations between key terms and conditions.

Nigel Hutchinson, Head of Evolve at Kainos, explains: “Powerful new search capabilities will be able to pick out patterns in data about an individual or a group of patients. The search engine recognises the link between endocrinology and diabetes, for example, so it knows what to look for and what to highlight.”
Further down the line demographic data will be added to the mix, he says. “The technology will be aware of the user too, able to serve up information that is tailored to the interests of a cardiologist, for example – in the same way that Amazon delivers personalised information to online shoppers. We’re only really starting to scratch the surface, but Kainos is at the forefront of this field and we’re excited to have a number of our Trusts, including The Ipswich Hospital, on the journey with us.”

Healthcare Analytics has been identified as an important new field as service managers attempt to bring healthcare costs back within budget. The NHS funding shortfall is currently at a level of about £30-40 billion. Clinical Commissioning Groups, responsible for 60-70% of all spending, must reduce existing spending by a third. This scale of economy cannot be achieved by making tweaks to operational costs, or cutting routine operations. Real savings depend on a transition to preventative healthcare, which in turn depends on joined-up systems and a comprehensive single patient view. This is where Kainos Evolve comes in.

Kainos will showcase the latest version of Evolve at eHI Live on November 5-6 at Birmingham NEC, on stand D16. Visitors will be invited to watch a demo of the new Smart Index & Search features. They will also be able to see Evolve for iPad in action. This mobile EMR solution is revolutionising the way patient information is accessed - and care given - in hospitals and out in the community.
