SAS Institute, the leading provider of data warehousing and business intelligence, today announced availability of Release 1.2 of AppDev Studio(tm) software, its applications development suite.

First announced in 1999, AppDev Studio provides a single interface for the development of thin and power client information-delivery applications supporting all Web-development standards, including Java, CGI/HTML and Active Server Pages. AppDev Studio includes the first Java integrated development environment (IDE) and InformationBeans (re-usable Java components) tailored specifically to the development of enterprise-wide decision-support applications. Both features enable organisations to rapidly develop thin-client applications that give an unlimited number of users access to SAS' decision-support capability.

"The internet will be a major access route for Intelligent Finance and the very fast-moving nature of internet business means that we needed a flexible environment for developing management reporting applications for large numbers of users. We have a target of 500,000 customers joining
Intelligent Finance in the first 12 months of operation. AppDev Studio 1.2 offers us that flexibility" says Stephen McCrory, Customer Relationship Development Director, at Intelligent Finance, a division of Halifax plc, one of the UK's most established providers of financial services with 20 million customers, 3.4 million shareholders, and 37,000 members of staff.

Intelligent Finance, which will launch in July, will use AppDev Studio 1.2 to provide management reports on key performance issues such as the numbers of accounts opened that day, loans sold and overdrafts created. "We are the first internet and phone bank to launch with a full range of personal banking products - current account, credit card, mortgage, savings and personal loans. The supply of management reports across the range is vital in co-ordinating activity on all products," says McCrory

AppDev Studio 1.2 adds a number of new features that enhance SAS' "information anywhere" platform, which gives organisations the freedom to choose on what hardware platform and in which programming language to develop applications and also how to distribute information generated by those applications to users. Highlights of the new version include:

* Support for the development of WAP (wireless application protocol) applications for hand-held devices.

* Support for JavaServer Pages technology and Java Servlets.

* Online analytical processing (OLAP) support on PC, UNIX or mainframe.

New on the development side are TransformationBeans, reusable components that automate the production of Wireless Markup Language and HTML, allowing for speedy drag-and-drop development of business applications for browsers and hand-held devices. Also new in 1.2 is the addition of support for JavaServer Pages technology and Java Servlets, giving developers freedom to choose the development technology that best suits their application needs, whether that choice is CGI/HTML, Java applets, Java applications JavaServer Pages technology, Java Servlets, traditional SAS applications or Active Server Pages. SAS was an early supporter of JavaServer Pages technology, which allows dynamic Web page generation. Web page designers need little Java programming knowledge to develop open, sophisticated, interactive Web applications.
AppDev Studio 1.2 is integrated with SAS' Output Delivery System, which allows users to choose the interface through which they access information, from HTML tables, GIF files, Java Graphics and Active X applications.

Further enhancements to AppDev Studio include:

* Industry-leading interactive debugging capabilities.

* Improved mainframe support (for access to OS/390(r) data).

* Online analytical processing (OLAP) support for multidimensional structures, such as hybrid and relational OLAP, allowing access to critical business data and models on PC, UNIX or mainframe.

* Bookmarks that help corporate decision makers pinpoint critical business views and share them in context across the organisation.

* Printing from Java technology-based applications that provides intelligent layout of document components, allowing hard copy circulation of Web-based reports. This avoids the cumbersome additional programming usually required to print from Java-based applications.

"AppDev Studio 1.2 supports every major Web standard on both the server and the client side. CIOs can choose SAS as their standard for business intelligence in the knowledge that the analytical power of SAS can be deployed throughout the organisation, regardless of the applications development and information distribution architecture," says Allan Russell, vice president of strategy for SAS EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa).

AppDev Studio 1.2 also offers n-tier user support, remote editing and debugging capability, and full support for UNIX, OS/390 and Windows NT operating system security.
