London, United Kingdom (November 11, 2013) – As the UK's first online marketplace for children's goods made and sold by small and independent designers and retailers, is urging British consumers to "think small" and "think British" this Christmas.

By supporting small and independent children’s retailers this Christmas, shoppers can find unique gifts that delight while also feeling good that their purchases are supporting the UK economy.

That’s what Loubilou CEO and co-founder Heath Kane is hoping that shoppers will keep in mind as they gear up for the impending Christmas shopping season. He hopes consumers will select items for their quality and craftsmanship – and be aware of how and where they’re made.

“Consumers should know that their purchasing behaviours really do matter,” says Kane. “By buying products sold by small businesses, they’re supporting the economy and all the people who are involved bringing those goods to market.”

Kane says that about 85 percent of the items currently sold on Loubilou are made in Britain. Many of these items are currently featured in a special "Best of British" section (

In recent months, political and economic leaders including Prime Minister David Cameron have emphasised the key role they expect small businesses to play to lift the UK out of recession.

“By showcasing and promoting small businesses, we’re doing our part to support the UK economy,” says Kane. “We hope our actions will encourage British consumers to think more broadly about the impact of their purchases before they buy.”

“When consumers think about the cost of an item, they just look at the price tag,” says Kane, who has a son (8) and daughter (6). “They don’t consider the human costs, like job losses locally or unfair employment practices at factories overseas, or the environmental impacts of shipping mass produced goods to sell on the other side of the globe.”

Kane says he hopes that Loubilou’s commitment to showcasing British-made goods sold by small independent businesses will inspire consumers to make more thoughtful choices this Christmas.

“Our sellers offer a wide range of unique and high-quality British-made gifts in a range of prices,” he says. “Buying British is good for our buyers and our sellers – and it’s good for Britain.”
