December is set to become the only month of 2013 to experience a year-on-year improvement in retail footfall
The latest weekly retail footfall update from Ipsos Retail Performance shows that shopper numbers continue to exceed those of last year. For the week commencing 8th December, Ipsos’ Retail Traffic Index, the national barometer of retail footfall, recorded a 1.0% increase year-on-year and growth of 7.6% week-on-week. This figure slightly exceeds Ipsos’ forecast of 6.5% week-on-week growth.
With just over one week to go before Christmas Day arrives, December is set to become the only month of 2013 to experience a year-on-year improvement in retail footfall. For the month to date, shopper numbers are 1.6% ahead of last year.
“Last week was another busy week on the high street,” comments Dr Tim Denison, Director of Retail Intelligence at Ipsos Retail Performance. “We are seeing particularly high shopper numbers in the northern parts of the UK. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, for example, footfall is up 9.3% in the month to date against last year. This may well reflect a greater sense of job security there compared to people’s outlook at the same time last year.”

Ipsos Retail Performance forecasts that this week, the last before Christmas, will be the busiest of the year. It expects shopper numbers to surge by 16% on last week, but fall slightly short of last year (-0.5%).
“Everything is on track to put a little cheer back into retailing, after another difficult year,” says Denison. “This week is the busiest of the whole year and store managers up and down the country will be savouring the sight of their stores teeming with festive shoppers, reminding them of Christmases Past.”
