More than 40% of major UK companies' web sites are hard to find, reports Receptional.com, the internet marketing consultancy.
Web site analysis of 300 of the country's largest corporations
found that nearly half the sites were not designed to be found by search engines. The results illustrate the failure of many UK companies to understand the way that people interact with the internet.
The sample used by Receptional.com was taken from companies listed on the London Stock exchange. While 54% of the sites were assessed as 'good', just 5.5% ranked 'fair' and the remainder failed the test.
Receptional.com's Dixon Jones explained, "Only a very small proportion of web pages on the internet are successfully registered or indexed by the search engines. This is because they either don't contain the right code, or they are structured in a way which makes it impossible for the search engines to penetrate them.
"We know that three quarters of those seeking information on the internet use search engines, so having a web site that can't be found by them makes no sense at all. If UK companies really wish to embrace the opportunties of the internet they must educate themselves to understand this important issue."
