• EU data protection legislation heads for long overdue reform

Taunton, UK, 17th March 2014 DESlock Limited, the UK leader in data encryption solutions, applauds the news that the European Parliament has voted this week, in favour of overhauling the current data protection legislation. Despite the fears of an additional burden on businesses, the reform is necessary to level the pitch against organised crime and continuing data breach incidents says UK encryption vendor DESlock Limited.

“With headline facts such as organizations liable for fines of up to 5% of revenue, up to 100M EUR and the proposed obligations that go with it, there can be no doubt that the planned reforms will meet opposition for being an additional burden on businesses. This should, however, be balanced alongside the IT security news of the growth of organized crime, targeting exactly the same data which this reform seeks to protect”. comments David Tomlinson, Managing Direction of DESlock Ltd.

“In the recent cyber attack on US retailer Target, 110 Million customers credit and debit card details were stolen using a commercial product called Citadel, developed and sold for such a purpose. Whilst the term “Virus” implies something accidental or unlucky, the reality is that the cause may be anything but accidental. By introducing regulations relating to the personal data of EU citizens, wherever that data is stored or processed, we will see the benefits of doing so outside the EU diminished, and assuming no watering down and with proper enforcement we can expect to see the resources protecting our information better matched to those trying to attack it” Tomlinson continues.

In 2013 DESlock became the first entrant into the newly formed ESET Technology Alliance Program, to better protect businesses with a range of complementary IT security solutions that seamlessly integrate with leading security firm ESET's range of security solutions.

“Our DESlock data encryption products are aimed at preventing data breaches and while we see the guidance and enforcement coming from the UK’s Information Commissioners Office (ICO) as clear, and with their latest publications, increasingly practical; speaking to our channel partners in other EU countries tells a different story. If the whole EU takes on this regulation as intended, then it will mark the start of a big change for the majority of European CIO’s.” explains Tomlinson

Richard Guga, EMEA Business Development Lead for ESET comments “ Compliance requirements and market pressures demand innovative solutions that deliver security confidence, convenience, cost effectiveness. ESET and Technology Alliance partner DESlock+ address this demanding environment with ultra strong, super simple multi-layered protection in the form of proven detection technology, secure authentication and end to end encryption. The result is a one-stop-shop for technology compliance.”

The new regulations will include a 'right to be forgotten' allowing individuals the right to have their data deleted from companies' systems and a 'right to data portability'' to streamline ease of transfer of data between service providers. Companies will also need explicit consent from individuals before processing their data and data protection safeguards will be built into services from the ground up. Any resultant data breaches that can adversely affect an individual must be made known to them in a timely fashion and the penalties for abuse of data will be fines of up to 5 per cent of an organisation's global turnover.

Now the outcome of the plenary vote is known, negotiations with the EU 28 member states about how to complete the law are expected to take place in June.
