We know that web scraping, or data theft from web sites, is on the increase everywhere

ScrapeSentry Ready to protect Ladbrokes from Web Scraping during UK’s Busiest Racing Festival

With the Aintree Festival and the Grand National (April 3-5 2014) usually being the busiest race meeting for the UK betting industry, ensuring that customers can place bets quickly and efficiently online is paramount for bookmakers. Making an investment to safeguard that its customers can do this, Ladbrokes will again be using Sentor’s ScrapeSentry service to protect its web site from web scraping for this year’s races. Ladbrokes plc is a leader in the global betting and gaming market with annual Group revenues of over £1 billion (GBP).

Scraping (also known as web scraping, screen scraping or data scraping) is where large amounts of data from a web site is copied manually or with a script or program. In the case of the betting industry, these scrapers are most likely looking to capture odds, and amend their own accordingly to ensure they remain competitive. This action can have the unintended (or sometimes the intended) consequence of also then slowing access to the scraped site and to customers being unable to complete transactions, so that they abandon the site and go elsewhere.

Martin Zetterlund of Sentor said, “We know that web scraping, or data theft from web sites, is on the increase everywhere, and that companies like Ladbrokes are being targeted in relatively sophisticated, systematic attacks by web bots. We also know from our work on its site last year that Grand National Day could see Ladbrokes being scraped over 1 million times and that at peak times 60% of its traffic was actually scraping traffic. That was a situation that clearly had to stop, and so they looked to us and our ScrapeSentry service to block illegitimate traffic without affecting the legitimate users’ experience. We are pleased to say that our service keeps Ladbrokes sites running smoothly and its data safe and sound.”
