Leaders in online and mobile gambling, SuperCasino, have responded to the news that officials in South Africa have submitted a draft set of rules that could see the legalisation of internet betting in the country.

In a move that has been mooted for some time, the introduction of the draft Remote Gambling Bill of 2014 is being regarded by many as a watershed moment in the bid to legislate online gambling in South Africa.

Lawmakers have come under increasing pressure to consider internet betting from commercial interests that are against the spread of unregulated gaming sites, with consumer protection and taxation also mitigating factors.

A spokesperson for SuperCasino welcomed the development, saying: “We are encouraged to hear that South Africa is proposing to legislate online and mobile gambling. Its popularity is only going to grow and hopefully this process will ensure that the people of South Africa will get to enjoy it too.”

The draft proposal, which is available for public consultations and comments for one month from its publication date of April 25, has introduced a stipulation that requires any operator offering gaming in South Africa to hold a valid licence issued by the National Gambling Board South African regulatory body.

Another caveat in the bill requires operators to keep “some part of the remote gambling equipment” within the province that was granted the application. It permits virtual gambling games, person-to-person betting, equal chance gambling, and casino games, bingo and sports betting. Registration as a South African resident will also allow players to bet at any licences web location. However, online gambling operators will not be permitted to extend credit to players for internet betting of any sort.

Famous for providing a realistic gaming experience online, offers games to suit a variety of tastes, including roulette, blackjack, card games, table and video poker as well as a selection of slots and arcade games.
