Leaders in online and mobile gambling, SuperCasino, anticipate that the continued growth in online gambling revenues in the US state of Delaware will convince other states to legalise it.

Delaware is currently one of only three US states, together with New Jersey and Nevada, to regulate internet betting, and according to figures from the Delaware Lottery its three gambling facilities generated $206,833 in online revenue during March, of which poker accounted for $73,971.

Delaware Park, Dover Downs and Harrington Raceway were authorised to start offering online gambling services to those physically within the state in late 2013 and revenues have been increasing steadily since then.

New Jersey, home of famous casino hotspot Atlantic City, recorded a yield of $11.9 million from internet betting during the same period, of which around $3.2 million came from poker alone.

In a bid to increase revenues from online poker play, in February the neighbouring states signed a compact to share liquidity in what was the first deal of its kind in the US for the commercial casino industry.

The states of California, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and New York are currently exploring the possibility of legalising online gambling, however none of them are expected to do so in 2014.

Meanwhile, the current position of those in Washington varies between those in favour of introducing a nationwide online poker system, and others who want internet betting banned outright.

A spokesperson for SuperCasino believes neither of those scenarios is likely, but he does think the boost that online gambling revenues have provided to the economies of the three states that have legalised it will lead to others doing the same.

He said: “The demand for online gaming is only going to increase, and as such, the revenues from online gambling will do the same. We predict that this will convince a number of other US states to see the merits of a regulated online gambling system in the next few years.”
