How New Technology could have rescued ET, Nemo and even Macaulay Culkin
What if ET had owned a sat phone, Nemo had been fitted with a GPS Tracker and Kevin’s parents in Home Alone had a web cam?
With tongue firmly in cheek, Maplin the electronics experts, have pin-pointed classic movies where new technology could have been a game-changer.
Nemo with a tracker could have been found in an hour and with a sat phone ET would have had a lot less hassle phoning home. As for Macaulay Culkin’s character accidentally left Home Alone - a webcam and tablet would have allowed his parents to watch him from Paris and CCTV would have foiled the bungling burglars.
As part of their “Maplin Moment” campaign which highlights new-tech solutions to everyday problems, the high street retailer has identified box office hits that could have played out very differently if only the characters had been given access to technology we now take for granted.
The love story of Cinderella would have seen a quicker ending if the couple had used a camera-phone selfie to capture their moment. And the Wolf of Wall Street might still be in business, had he used a personal hard drive.
Breffni Walsh, group marketing officer at Maplin Electronics, said: “We all think about alternate endings to our favourite films and in an age where technology is everywhere, it is interesting to think how these might have changed if they had included a tech moment. Looking at the results a Maplin Moment could have meant a happier ending for some of these iconic characters!”
Ten Films that would have ended differently if they had had a tech moment:
1. ET – satellite phone
2. Finding Nemo – GPS Tracker
3. Home Alone – CCTV, webcam and tablet
4. Saving Private Ryan – Mobile Phone
5. Wolf of Wall Street – Personal hard drive
6. Back to the future – Speed Cameras
7. Toy Story – Webcam, Andy would never have got tired of Woody if he knew his toys could talk!
8. Notting Hill – A Kindle
9. Gone with the Wind – Smoke Alarm
10. Cinderella – Camera-phone, Prince Charming would have found her much faster with a photo.
Maplin recently unveiled its first ever national TV campaign, which is all about the ‘Maplin Moment’ – those instances when your own technical know-how runs dry, but Maplin has the perfect solution.
