Customers on the Compaq web site click PhoneMe button for an instant, live call back

London, 23 June 1998 - PhoneMe Ltd, a service provider focused on the delivery of low cost Internet enabled freephone services for the global market, has announced that Compaq is using the PhoneMe service in its new Glasgow call centre to help promote improved customer relations.

PhoneMe provides a technically advanced communications tool that enables companies to connect their online shoppers instantly, via the telephone, to a "live" contact. Customers on the Compaq UK web site can receive an instant, free call, or specify a call time of their choice, simply by entering their number and clicking the Compaq callback button.

David Petts, Commercial Business director, Compaq Computer Ltd said: "The Glasgow call centre is the cornerstone by which Compaq engages the customer with its new business model. We realise that better management of customer enquiries will help us achieve our goal of providing all UK markets, including micro and SME, with the best products and services in the industry. The PhoneMe button is a simple, yet powerful way to achieve first class customer service."

"We are using digital technology to achieve a freephone breakaway," said Damon Oldcorn, Managing Director at PhoneMe. "Traditional freephone suppliers have become very set in their ways and it is not surprising that a lot of companies are shying away from their services. PhoneMe offers an easy, cost effective way to help increase online sales and assist companies in providing the high level of customer service and technical support expected by users today."

PhoneMe's global telephony system works by switching two telephone calls together at digital speeds; the first call to the telephone number that the customer has input live on site and the second to the number attached to the company web site. Then the calls are digitally pulled together, an automatic process with no need for intervention from the company or the customer. The process is so fast that it is imperceptible to either party and voice contact is achieved at great speed. There is no need for the customer to download new software and no major integration programmes for the client, so the whole process is simple and cost effective. PhoneMe has placed its server in a secure location, Telehouse 1 in Docklands, London. Further server infrastructure is being considered for San Francisco and Tokyo to give a triangulation of resilience.
