The reaction follows an announcement from the Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew stating that the enhancement of services may cause fares to increase, improving the stability of the system in the long run.

With a new contracting model set to come into action in 2016, officials in Singapore are determined to ensure a sustainable plan is put into place. With many new bus routes set to be opened, without the correct budgeting and management the service would end up seriously costing the Asian city-state.

Lui Tuck Yew has promised to make the system financially viable. This is not just from the point of view of the government, but also the taxpayer too. It is understood that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are working hard to create a framework that allows new routes to be assessed sufficiently before they are put into practice.

If certain routes offer a lower passenger threshold then it is likely they will be altered or removed. Those with a greater number of passengers will require more services. The LTA want guarantee that they are distributed evenly, providing a better all-round service for those using the buses.

The service standards intend to be raised at the correct rate in terms of factors such as wage increases and rising fuel costs. If these are not taken into account, authorities fear it will result in a bigger bill in the long run.
