The fact that only 10% of the Indian population is smartphone-enabled is an exciting prospect for app publishers looking for new markets to explore
LONDON, UK – JULY 16, 2014 – App Annie, the leading provider of app analytics and market data, today reveals Google Play downloads continue to soar, exceeding iOS App Store by around 60 percent last quarter, up from 10 percent over the same period in 2013.
According to App Annie’s Q2 2014 Market Index*, published today, this explosive growth is being driven by emerging markets, as Brazil continues its rise, and Thailand and India see significant increases in Google Play downloads. Helped by a large number of consumers switching to smartphones, India, which climbed two spots to number three in Google Play downloads last quarter, boosted Google’s performance. Mobile powerhouses China and Japan were the primary drivers of iOS revenue for Q2 2014, which despite lower download numbers still brought in 80 percent more revenue than Google Play.
Oliver Lo, EVP Marketing at App Annie said of the Q2 Market Index: “The notion that ‘West is Best’ is holding less sway as Google Play and iOS App Store are being increasingly supported by emerging smartphone markets such as India and China. The fact that only 10% of the Indian population is smartphone-enabled is an exciting prospect for app publishers looking for new markets to explore. We expect strong Google Play downloads combined with future smartphone adoption could help set the stage for rapid growth in India’s mobile app-related revenue by 2017.”
Also of note in Q2 2014, Brazil’s market share in Google Play downloads doubled in the Sports category from Q1, thanks to the country’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The country is also of interest to Apple, which opened its first retail store in Rio de Janeiro in February. The World Cup’s impact on the Sports category wasn’t limited only to Brazil. The entire category experienced 20 percent quarterly growth worldwide, with notable increases in Germany, Argentina and the United States as FIFA’s official app took off across the world.
Elsewhere, the Navigation category, which includes apps like Google Maps, Geocaching and TomTom, rose nearly 20 percent quarter-over-quarter in iOS App Store revenue ahead of the summer holidays. This was driven largely by European countries Belgium, Germany and Lithuania.

iOS & Google Play highlights
The top three countries — US, Japan, and China — now constitute more than half of total iOS App Store revenue.
In the Q1 2014 Market Index, China saw massive gains in the iOS App Store following Apple’s long-awaited deal with China Mobile. While growth has slowed since the initial launch, iOS revenue in China is still on a strong upward trajectory, increasing 20 percent from Q1 to Q2 of 2014.
Already the largest country by combined iOS App Store and Google Play revenue, Japan continued to grow faster than the rest of the market. Games have always been very successful in the nation, consistently driving more than 90 percent of its combined iOS App Store & Google Play revenue, and Q2 was no different.
