local businesses previously relied on the council funded CCTV to protect their livelihood

Recent funding cuts made by North Norfolk District Council have left seaside towns like Cromer and Wells-next-the-Sea unprotected.

Only three town councils in the North Norfolk district are taking over the running of their surveillance systems after North Norfolk District Council scrapped its CCTV technology in October last year to save £200,000 per year. The decision has left towns such as Cromer and Wells-next-the-Sea without cameras due to increasingly high running costs. Both Cromer and Wells-next-the-Sea are increasingly popular seaside towns. In the summer months, they become a hub for visiting tourists.

Despite being situated in relatively peaceful areas, local businesses previously relied on the council funded CCTV to protect their livelihood. With so many cutbacks being made by the council in CCTV technology, questions are being raised about how business in these areas will be sufficiently protected.

CCTV cameras are preventative measures which also provide clear and strong evidence against crime. Skimping on council CCTV costs therefore, will only leave local businesses vulnerable.

Upon hearing the news, a spokesperson from AlertSystems, shared their thoughts on the matter.

“Seaside town businesses contribute to the area’s charm and personality. Often these small businesses have existed near the seafront for many years, providing for tourists. When council funding is cut, it is often these smaller businesses that suffer. This is certainly true for the CCTV technology cuts in the North Norfolk district. AlertSystems urges business owners to take security into their own hands. Investing in commercial surveillance systems would leave businesses protected, and reliant upon the budgeting of their local councils. Businesses mean livelihoods, and high-quality business CCTV can protect those livelihoods from crime.”
