Leading overseas relocation specialist, Interdean, predicts an increasingly bright future for the German tourism industry, after figures last year suggested the number of Britons choosing to take a holiday in the country had increased by around 10 per cent.

After years overlooked in favour of more traditional European destinations like France and Spain, Germany attracted eight per cent more visitors during the first five months of 2013, compared with the same period the year before. A total of 1.67 million overnight stays by British travellers were recorded between January and May, according to its London tourist office.

It cited the value for money on offer in Germany as being a significant reason for the increase in visitors. Average room rates are known to be far below those in other European countries, and this combined with its close proximity to Britain has made it an attractive option.

In addition to some of its cities being only an hour’s flight away from the UK, Germany has an outstanding and relatively inexpensive rail network that extends to Eurostar destinations, meaning that most locations can be reached entirely by train.

The country’s cultural and culinary attractions were also highlighted as being a major draw, with Germany now thought to be second only to France for Michelin-starred restaurants.

Germany still lags way behind its neighbours in terms of popularity among UK holidaymakers, but leading international shipping and removal services provider, Interdean, believes that Germany can expect a continued increase in visitor numbers in the years to come.

A spokesman for the company said: ‘The rise in visitor numbers to Germany is great news for their tourism industry and there is no reason to think that this trend will not continue. It has been under-rated as a holiday destination over the years, but it looks like people are starting to realise just how much it has to offer visitors.

‘It is home to some of the most vibrant and friendly cities in the world and has numerous cultural attractions for visitors to enjoy throughout the year. It is also much cheaper than some of the more established European holiday destinations and its fantastic transport infrastructure makes it easy to visit friends and family who have relocated there,’ he added.
