The reaction follows an article in tourist magazine, ‘Make it in Germany’, detailing the ever- increasing immigration figures that the country is experiencing, highlighting its continued prosperity despite Europe’s recent economic difficulties.

In a survey conducted by the country’s Federal Statistical Office, more than 1.2 million people moved to Germany in 2013 alone. This puts the immigration figures at the highest recorded level in over 20 years, with 1993 the last time they experienced an influx this high. The net migration (the number of people entering the country minus the number of those leaving) seen in Germany was at almost half a million, with the figure reported to be around 437,000 people – itself another twenty-year high point.

There are a number of contributing factors to the rising immigration levels. New European Union regulations now permit increased mobility across the continent. Migrants from neighbouring Poland account for almost 190,000 of the overall total, as well as a huge and expected shift in population from Romania and Bulgaria (134,494 and 58,950 respectively), following their recently approved membership to the EU.

It isn’t just Europeans that are aware of Germany’s prosperity, however. Immigration from Africa has risen by 125 per cent, while Asia and Oceania have both seen their migration figures rise by around 25 per cent. The survey suggests that Germany is now the second most popular destination after the United States for migrant movement.

While the migrant population distribution is spread relatively evenly, there are a few states that are proving to be slightly more popular than others. Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse are the leading four states when it comes to preferred destinations for new residents of the country.

A spokesperson for Interdean, market leaders in international relocation, has released a statement following the report. ‘It comes as no surprise that Germany is the most popular destination in Europe when it comes to moving abroad,’ it read.

‘For years, it has shown itself to be the standard bearer when it comes to infrastructure, and the economic stability that the country can offer is a huge draw for expatriates the world over. This current trend of migration to Germany is something we expect to continue for the next few years, as their continued prosperity shows little sign of declining in this period.’
