The award-winning agency have taken a closer look at the new curriculum introduced in schools this month, which sees children as young as five learning programming skills in the classroom.
It’s part of what is being seen as a long term effort to close the technology skills-gap in the UK, between the amount of jobs and those qualified to fill these vacancies. The new computing curriculum has been designed to focus on three key areas; digital literacy, online safety and computer science- helping students to understand what Michael Gove describes as “not just how to work a computer, but how a computer works”. Microsoft, Google and the Royal Academy of Engineering were all involved in putting together the new curriculum, which includes modules on algorithms, creating coding and learning Boolean logic.
With a recent study by the UK Council of Professors predicting that demand for IT professionals will increase by up to 15% in the next 8 years, the team at Absolute Digital Media were keen to find out more about the curriculum. CEO, Ben Austin shares his thoughts.
“It’s about more than just encouraging young people to get into digital careers, it’s also a key part of helping them to understand the importance of online safety and security, as well as teaching them responsible ways of interacting with others online. This could be a positive step in tackling cyber-crime.
“However it will only work if the government invests enough money to ensure teachers have the right knowledge, skills and experience to deliver this new curriculum effectively.”
