Pocket-Sized Portability Coupled with Industry-Leading
Wireless Connectability Make the IBM WorkPad Companion an
Incomparable Mobile e-business Solution. Prices Start from

IBM today announced the European launch of its WorkPad* PC
Companion, a pocket-sized e-business tool that gives users
easy access to enterprise information. Along with the
launch, IBM is also announcing the availability in July of a
free software upgrade that enables users of the IBM WorkPad
PC Companion to perform wireless synchronisation of data
using infrared beaming.

The new WorkPad PC Companion fits in the palm of the hand
with a sleek industrial design and offers ample memory for
customised applications, infrared (IR) beaming for wireless
connectivity and file-linking functions for quick, easy
access to applications(1). Designed for corporate mobile
users, the IBM WorkPad PC Companion seamlessly links users
to desktop applications such as e-mail, date books, address
books and to-do lists. At 120mm x 82mm x 18 mm, the IBM
WorkPad weighs only 0.17kg(2) and leads the market in
packing vital e-business capabilities into ergonomic,
portable design.

"As more professionals come to rely on mobile computing,
it's important that they have immediate access anytime,
anywhere," said Adalio Sanchez, general manager, IBM Mobile
Computing. "Because enterprise access is crucial for
e-business, the WorkPad is the ideal choice for companies
with mobile executives who need immediate access to Internet

IBM WorkPad, already launched in a prior version in the
United States and select countries in Europe, is the result
of a strategic alliance between IBM and 3Com
Corporation****, the parent company of Palm Computing, Inc.
Exclusively marketed to businesses, the WorkPad, while
unavailable in retail stores, is perfectly suited as a
mobile e-business solution for companies of all sizes that
require its professionals to be connected from anywhere at
any time.

Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and
platform development at 3Com Corporation****, commented,
"The design of the Palm Computing platform allows developers
and partners to provide IBM's customers with
industry-leading solutions. When combined with IBM's strong
support and service, in addition to Lotus applications, the
customer benefits from an easy-to-use, cost-effective

Notes to Editor

Combining Business Productivity with Convenience

Designed to enhance business performance on the go, the
WorkPad is the ideal solution for many sectors of activity,
including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, consulting, sales and
distribution, and banking. As mobile computers start to take
the place of desktops and as businesspeople require more and
more mobility to perform their jobs comfortably, the WorkPad
is the perfect combination of essential connectivity and
convenient portability.

Enhanced Mobile Connectivity

The IBM WorkPad incorporates state-of-the-art technology
which now allows users to remotely synchronise with their
PC, server data or dial-in access to a TCP/IP(3) connection.
Users can rapidly exchange data with their PC or server by
simply slipping their WorkPad companion into its cradle and
pushing the synchronisation button. With an optional WorkPad
modem, users can synchronise information from remote
locations. In addition, users can quickly and easily access
information from the Internet(3), with real-time information
when they need it most.

The WorkPad PC Companion takes synchronisation one step
further with new file-linking features. This makes it
possible to import data from a remote server each time
synchronisation occurs, making the IBM WorkPad an ideal
e-business tool by providing users with the most current
information possible.

Wireless Connectability

WorkPad also incorporates new IR beaming, which allows users
to share information with infrared-capable WorkPad PC
Companions. By selecting an application or file and pointing
the WorkPad at the other device -- within a distance of one
metre-- users can transfer data to the receiver.

Today's announcement of a free software upgrade that enables
users of the IBM WorkPad to perform wireless back-up and
synchronisation of data using infrared beaming means that
users no longer need to bring along a synchronising cradle
on the road, greatly enhancing the portability of the
WorkPad. By simply pointing the WorkPad in the direction of
their ThinkPad* notebook computer or IBM desktop PC IR
adapter and tapping the WorkPad HotSync application, users
can seamlessly synchronise data.

Starting in July, the new software can be easily downloaded
from the IBM WorkPad Web site at
By using the WorkPad's existing desktop install tool and
on-line instructions, users can easily download the software
to their WorkPad using a ThinkPad notebook or desktop PC. By
simply pointing the WorkPad in the direction of the ThinkPad
notebook computer IR port and tapping the WorkPad HotSync
application, users can enjoy the experience of wireless data

To bring this wireless application to IBM desktop PC users,
IBM has partnered with Extended Systems. For a minimal cost,
WorkPad users can simply connect the Extended Systems
external JetEye IR port to their IBM desktop PC to perform
wireless WorkPad-to-PC back-up and synchronisation of data.
The Extended Systems JetEye solution is part of the ThinkPad
Proven Solutions Program, which assures that third party
products are tested, warranted and supported by the
manufacturer to ThinkPad compatibility standards.

Ease of Use

The WorkPad, extremely simple to use, is an ideal hand-held
e-business tool. It offers enhanced data capacity that
utilises up to 2MB of RAM (4), which is enough capacity for
up to 6,000 addresses, 3,000 appointments, 1,500 memos and
200 e-mail messages. A new user interface provides a variety
of fonts and sizes for crystal-clear readability; an
optimised desktop calendar provides greater access and
ease-of-use functions to the address and to-do categories.
Users can now easily drag and drop information from one
application to the other.

Lotus Notes Availability

Options available on the IBM WorkPad include EasySync
technology. When combined with Lotus Organiser*** (available
separately), important information stored in either
application can easily be synchronised with the IBM WorkPad
to keep mobile users connected. For Notes users, the
EasySync option provides the ability to synchronise Notes
Mail, enabling users to access, forward, delete and create
new mail messages directly from the WorkPad. In addition,
EasySync enables users to exchange calendar, to-do, address
and personal journal information.

For Organiser users, EasySync is included with Organiser '97
GS and Lotus' new Organiser 41 Premium (English version
only). Organiser users can use EasySync to transfer data
between IBM WorkPad and Organiser's calendar, address book
and notepad sections. Lotus EasySync makes the IBM WorkPad
an ideal e-commerce solution for Notes and Organiser users
who need continuous access to critical business information.

Tools and Utilities

Additional enhancements to the WorkPad are available from
third-party vendors. With IBM WorkPad, data exchange is
seamless when used with popular Personal Information
Management applications and additional applications from
Palm Computing**** platforms. Some of these include AvantGo
Web Client by AvantGo software, which allows developers to
build and deploy Web-based programs for their IBM WorkPad,
and the MobileXtension for Lotus Notes from SoftMagic
Corporation, which extends Notes solutions such as database
synchronisation and customised forms to the WorkPad
organiser. For those who need to send and receive faxes on
the road or access the Internet, HandFax, HandStamp,
HandStamp Palm by Smartcode Software provide the latest in
communications options(3).

Pricing and Availability

The new IBM WorkPad PC Companion is available in English and
German language versions and will be shipped at the end of
June throughout all major European countries and offered at
an estimated reseller price starting at £299.00(5).
Additionally, the IBM WorkPad is protected by a one-year
warranty with IBM's service and support available 24 hours,
7 days-a-week (6).

The free IR synchronisation software upgrade to the IBM
WorkPad will be available for download in July. For more
information, users can visit the WorkPad Web site at By following the on-line
instructions and utilising the existing desktop install
tool, users can easily install the software to their WorkPad
