The overall value of the vehicles on their premises unfortunately requires a much greater deterrent system in place

The reaction follows a report in Wales Online after a vandalism spree carried out by one man in Bangor, targeting the forecourt of a car dealer, is recorded on the company’s security system.

College Motors in Bangor, North Wales, alerted local authorities in the area after their CCTV security system recorded a man systematically keying every car on their premises. Reports allege that forty vehicles were scratched, with the total cost of damages believed to be in excess of £20,000.

The footage shows the man, dressed all in black, looking at the vehicles before taking something from his pocket and proceeded to damage the cars from front to back. While the footage is enough to relay the incident to the police, the lack of a CCTV system of sufficient quality has meant the man still remains unidentified. Only one end of the forecourt was covered by cameras and as a result authorities have found it difficult to build a case.

With each panel costing around £500 to replace, the incident has proved extremely costly for the garage. A spokesperson for AlertSystems, leaders in business security systems, has released a statement following the event. “College Motors have been victims of what seems to be a mindless act of vandalism from an as-yet-unnamed individual in the area.

“The lack of significant evidence to identify the offender, is a further blow for the company, with the sole camera on the forecourt simply not sufficient enough to cover an area of its size. The overall value of the vehicles on their premises unfortunately requires a much greater deterrent system in place in order to reduce the chances of such an incident occurring.

“This incident will no doubt come as a lesson to the company, but should also be taken into account by business leaders across the country. Opportunist acts of vandalism may not always be preventable, but an investment in high-quality security systems is a huge step towards protecting premises and property against incidents such as this.”
