The reaction follows a recent report in the Bolton News detailing an incident that involved two men targeting a children’s play centre and stealing a van containing a large number of toys in central Bolton.
Kool Kidz, the children’s club in question, kept much of their equipment at a lock-up next door to their home on Tonge Bridge Industrial Estate, with many items also kept in an old LDV Box van that was always situated nearby. The van, not even road legal, had been used purely for storage purposes in recent months and it is likely to have been singled out by the two thieves.
Thanks to the CCTV security systems installed by a neighbouring business, footage was able to be passed onto authorities to help prosecute those responsible. After the centre had closed on Friday night, the men are seen to break into and then steal the vehicle at around 8.30pm.
The CCTV has provided the investigation with visuals of the two thieves, but as the theft was not reported until late the following Sunday it has proved extremely difficult to track the pair down. The van, however, was located in nearby Radcliffe, abandoned and with all the toys missing.
While the children’s centre was lucky that their neighbours had a CCTV security system in full working order, the fact that their premises were not properly protected has left the police in an extremely difficult position.
A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in commercial security implementation, has released a statement following the incident. “With many industrial estates constantly targeted by opportunist thieves, to leave premises unprotected by security ultimately runs the risk of incidents such as this occurring.
“While local authorities have been able to make some headway thanks to some of the centre’s neighbour’s well-placed security systems, without the premises having their own in place it has left them exposed to theft and damage. This is yet another example of why small and medium sized businesses in particular should take extra care when it comes to protecting their property, as not doing so can have extremely unfortunate consequences.”
