Police identified Ms Robertson quickly, using the footage provided by the garage and apprehended her at her residence.

The reaction follows a report in the Dunfermline press detailing an attempted armed robbery of a petrol station that resulted in the perpetrator being identified and prosecuted after being recorded by the forecourt’s CCTV security system.

Hayley Robertson, from Inverkeithing in Fife, approached a petrol station in the area armed with what was thought to have been an offensive weapon and proceeded to demand cash from the single employee working at the time. The employee, however, called Ms Robertson’s bluff and claimed the glass that surrounded the hatch was bulletproof, causing her to leave the scene abruptly.

Police identified Ms Robertson quickly, using the footage provided by the garage and apprehended her at her residence. The weapon seen in the footage turned out to be a replica painted black to give the impression to the employee that he was in serious danger.

A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in business security solutions, has released a statement following the report. “While the outcome of the incident at the garage in Fife was resolved successfully by authorities, it nevertheless highlights the dangers that lone workers can experience and underlines the need for suitable protection to always be in place.

“Thanks to the recording from the carefully placed CCTV cameras at the petrol station, a clear image of the woman in question was able to be accessed by authorities and they were able to act accordingly to bring her to justice. Regardless of the fact the employee showed immense bravery when faced with such a situation, or that the weapon was found to be a replica, it shows that with CCTV cameras in place the right course of action can be taken.

“Incidents such as this send the right message to potential criminals, showing that CCTV is not just a deterrent but an integral part of the prosecuting process, too."
