Without the presence of CCTV on the premises it is likely the would-be robber would not have been caught.
Leading providers of commercial CCTV, AlertSystems, have reported that a would-be thief was found crouching behind the bar of Greenock’s Tontine Hotel at 8am. He was suspected of trying to steal the till from the bar.
Multiple offender, Alistair Jannetts, could potentially be facing a prison term after pleading guilty to the offence just before he was due to stand trial. Jannetts had tried to maintain his innocence for eight months, but was forced to finally admit his criminality when he was faced with irrefutable CCTV footage from the hotel.
It was reported that Jannetts, 32, was found behind the bar by suspicious staff members. He then claimed he was a paying guest before making a swift exit from the building. The offender was said to be crouched down in the restricted area looking at various items, including the till. When the assistant manager was called, the accused was asked to leave the premises.
On their way to the hotel, Police spotted Jannetts on a nearby street when conducting a sweep of the area. It was then the police stopped the accused and he informed them he has been visiting a friend on Brisbane Street and therefore let him go on his way. After attending the hotel a short time later and viewing the CCTV, the guilty party could clearly be identified as Jannetts.
