Due to the absence of cameras, business leaders have little hope of finding the culprits

The reaction follows a report in The Bolton News detailing a suspected arson attack at an industrial estate in the area just weeks after the local business community voted in favour of shutting off the security systems that had previously protected the area.

Eight industrial estates in Bolton were linked to the comprehensive security system until it was decided that it was to be put out of use in December of last year. Many businesses suffered as a result of the fire, with Michael Hill and Sons Amusements being some of the worst hit, losing over £60,000 of dodgems that were stored in a fairground trailer on site.

Due to the absence of cameras, business leaders have little hope of finding the culprits. Michael Hill has said “we’ll probably never find out who did this – I think something needs to be done.” The fire itself has fuelled further debate within the community, with the cameras apparently accountable for an 80 per cent drop in crime during the six years they were installed.

It is not known if the 318 businesses that the previous system covered will vote in favour of its reinstallation. A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in the implementation of commercial security systems, has released a statement in favour of doing so. “What we have seen here in Bolton is a prime example of the importance of a fully-functioning security system for businesses serious about protecting their property.

“A fire of this scale is a hugely debilitating incident to happen to any business, but the fact that there is now very little chance for authorities to reprimand those responsible is particularly disappointing. With tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage done following the fire, it highlights that the cost of implementing and maintaining a successful, streamlined security system is a comparatively cost-effective alternative.”

Offering professional service and a complete range of security services such as monitored alarm systems, Automatic Number Plate Recognition and Avigilon CCTV security systems, AlertSystems provides effective and reliable solutions to security problems.
