But Londoners are the most likely to get the winter blues according to new Ukash research

London, February 2015 – As UK temperatures continue to stay low – and the pound remains strong against the Euro - some Brits may be thinking about grabbing some winter sun. According to new research from the Ukash Travel Money Prepaid MasterCard card that’s certainly true for those living in the East Midlands, with 31% having booked a sunny destination for a winter break; closely followed by Londoners at 26%.

However residents of the UK capital city may have good reason to book some winter sun as they also top the table for being the most prone to the winter blues according to the Ukash research. Just 14% of Londoners said they don’t suffer from the winter blues, although their close neighbours in the South East seem to be much happier with 28% saying they don’t get the winter blues.

The Ukash research also reveals some of the tactics used to combat the winter blues. 66% of Londoners sleep more in the winter. 60% of people in Wales said the same although only 41% of people in Yorkshire and the West Midlands resort to their duvets in the winter months. The Welsh scored the most across the UK when it comes to eating more to combat the winter blues, with 68% upping their food intake over the winter months. Yorkshire comes in second at 59% but only 48% of those living in the South West admitted to comfort eating.

“Our research suggests that most people change their behaviour in winter, whether it’s eating more or sleeping more,” explains James Allum, Chief Commercial Officer at Ukash. “And it’s not just about eating or sleeping more. Exercise is also a popular way to combat the winter blues with nearly a third (31%) of those living in the North West choosing exercise as a way to beat the winter blues, followed by Wales (29%) and the South West (28%).

“But what we also found was that planning ahead by booking a holiday for later in the year was a good way to combat gloomy thoughts. 29% of those from the South West prefer to look forward to a holiday later in the year, with Scotland (28%) and Wales and the North West (27%) close behind.”
