Job availability across the East of England dips amid election uncertainty

Contract Recruitment Index highlights
• There was a 6% decrease in jobs month-on-month
• End of financial year causes boom in accountancy roles
• Skills shortage within public sector procurement and contracts
• Rates increase by 41% across region month-on-month

Overall decline in job vacancies due to election uncertainty

The February 2015 East of England Recruitment Index recorded a 6% month-on-month downturn in job availability with 2,625 vacancies advertised, compared to 2,800 in January 2015. Uncertainty in the face of the upcoming election, heightened by the possibility of an in-out referendum on the UK’s EU membership if the Conservatives win, resulted in a dip in hiring activity.

Avtar Singh, Director of Venn Group, commented:

“Although there has been an overall dip in employment activity across the region, the end of the financial year has brought an increase in finance roles – particularly for Financial Accountants – within both the public and private sectors. Vacancies within payroll and tax are consistently high at this time of year with the usual yearly output of company tax, P60’s and P11D’s. For the retail field, whose profits soared over the Christmas and January sales periods, the number of financial roles has boomed.”

Contractors gain in remuneration stakes as a result of increased demand

The average rate for those securing jobs in February 2015 was 41% higher than those recorded in January 2015, with contractors now receiving an average of £17 per hour across the region.

Avtar Singh continued:

“One particularly prominent trend across the region is the specialist skills shortage all sectors are experiencing, which is in turn increasing the amount of employers turning to contractors to fill positions. For example, the NHS has seen a dramatic increase in CIPS – Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply – qualified Contract Managers. With their focus fixed on maximising cost savings and efficiencies in the contracting and procurement process, developing and managing a range of suppliers and improving service on delivery through the use of “best practice”, candidates experienced in this area are being snapped up across the region.”
