there needs to be a greater collaboration between council and community

The reaction comes following a report in the Stoke Sentinel, detailing a local business situated in the town centre that has been targeted by damaging vandalism only two weeks after opening its doors for the first time.

Shop owner Sarah Fisher found that the front door to her Elegant Affair shop had been kicked in by vandals and subsequently boarded up by police, leaving her having to pay hundreds of pounds in repairs. Due to the poor amount of CCTV coverage in the area, the incident has sparked many local businesses to call for further investment in security as police struggle to identify those responsible for the vandalism.

Ms. Fisher has now stated that until the council move to assist the local business community with their security investment, she has little choice but to install protective railings to avoid further incidents. She said: “I’m going to put in metal railings in front of the windows. I shouldn’t have to do this. The CCTV coverage should be better. If the council wants to look after the few businesses they have in Burslem then they should be putting more cameras up.”

A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in business security systems, has released a statement following the report. “The incident we have seen in Staffordshire is unfortunately a microcosm of a wider problem many business owners face.

“In order for these smaller businesses to remain protected, there needs to be a greater collaboration between council and community in order to work towards a viable, affordable solution for those who trade in areas with little security protection. Without doing so, there is little to deter vandals from targeting businesses again and the repair costs will only escalate.

“By enlisting the help of some security industry professionals, the area could be transformed into a safe and secure zone for companies to operate in. With CCTV more affordable than it has ever been, we cannot stress enough the importance of sensible security investment to avoid these instances happening in the future.”
