Property values in the area are almost 20 per cent higher than the rest of the region

House prices in Cambridge are up astonishing 34 per cent over the last five year, significantly outperforming the rest of the East of England in the property market.

A recent report from Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has shown that house prices in Cambridge have soared over the last five years. Property values in the area are almost 20 per cent higher than the rest of the region, which rose at a significantly lower rate of 9.4 per cent over the same five year period. The report also showed that the increase in property values was seen across the board, and applied to all property types purchased in the Cambridge area.

Flats in Cambridge saw the largest price increase, now at an average of £266,207 – an average increase of 39.7 per cent, while the average property value for a detached house rose to £593,750, up 35 per cent from five years previous. The report comes amid Prime Minister David Cameron’s pledge for 200,000 affordable new starter homes by 2020. Andrew McPhillips, economist for Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, commented on the report, saying: "Cambridge is hugely outperforming the East of England in terms of house prices and has had a steady influx of new build properties, particularly for flats."
