He then proceeded to run into the nearby sea and shouted fervently that he did not want to be arrested

The reaction comes following a report in the Daily Mirror detailing the successful apprehension of a burglary gang from Wythenshawe after one member’s distinctive woolly hat was identified on the CCTV cameras of one shop they targeted.

The piece of headwear proved instrumental in issuing sentences totalling in almost 35 years for the gang of six from Manchester. Having relocated to Scotland, they consistently targeted various shops and garages situated across Cumbria, County Durham and North Wales in raids that won them over £85,000 in stolen goods and cash.

The cumulative efforts of constabularies from England, Scotland and Wales ultimately led them to the arrest, although without the CCTV footage of the hat that officers were able to recognise instantly, it is unlikely the gang would have been able to be identified and apprehended in such a swift manner.

The hat itself was thrown away by Ryan Dunwoody, a member of the gang, as he absconded from the site of another attempted robbery, this time in Rhyl, North Wales. He then proceeded to run into the nearby sea and shouted fervently that he did not want to be arrested. Katie Nicolson, senior Crown Prosecutor for the North West, said: “CCTV, telephone evidence, and number plate recognition proved that all of the men took part.”
