the thief picked up a basket, looked around the shop for security and proceeded to place several items in the basket

Lancaster Police have released an image from CCTV footage showing a woman staring at the camera while stealing food from a Morecombe convenience store. The police are appealing for witnesses.

A thief was caught in Lancashire in early March stealing food from a convenience store on Lancaster Road. Lancaster Police have released an image of a woman stealing food from the One Stop Shop after she looked directly at the store’s CCTV camera. The incident occurred at about 7pm on March 8th, when the thief picked up a basket, looked around the shop for security and proceeded to place several items in the basket. She then left the store with the basket without paying for any of the items.

PC Caroline Caine of the Lancaster Police has provided the following statement: “We would like to appeal to the public and anyone who can identify the female in the CCTV images, to get in touch with us to help us and provide any information in regards to this investigation”.

AlertSystems, a UK provider of CCTV security systems takes a keen interest in appeals such as this. A spokesperson for the company commented on the robbery, saying “opportunist thieves such as this one who brazenly walk into shops and survey the area for security before stealing what they can are a real problem for convenience store owners. This woman entered the store with the sole intention of perpetrating a crime, thinking that she is above the law and beyond reproach. Fortunately, she had the audacity to look directly into the CCTV camera, aiding the police in their bid to apprehend her.”

“Once they are alert to criminals such as this, local residents will be circulating CCTV snapshot images on social media in a bid to hunt down thief. Unfortunately, the CCTV camera the store used wasn’t of the highest quality, giving the public a grainy picture to work from. If the store had invested in a high quality camera, the hunt for this brazen thief would be over a lot quicker, and the public would have an easier time spotting her from the crowd.”
