He then manhandled her, bound her with tape and marched her to the back room where the safe was kept

Leading providers of CCTV security, AlertSystems, have commented on the recent story involving a man who dressed up as a clown charity worker in order to stage a fake robbery.

Stephen Bellamy was captured on CCTV entering The Cheque Centre in Walton, Liverpool, dressed as a clown. The individual was dressed in white face paint, a yellow wig and a large pink plastic nose and was carrying a bucket posing as a charity collector. Upon entering the store he deliberately knocked over a container of water on the counter in order to give the manageress a reason to come from behind the counter to clear it up. He then manhandled her, bound her with tape and marched her to the back room where the safe was kept.

However, upon further investigation it is believed that Rachel Cleary, the manageress of The Cheque Centre, was in fact an accomplice rather than an innocent victim. Both Cleary and Bellamy have now been convicted of theft by a jury. Cleary is set to serve two years behind bars whilst Bellamy will serve a longer sentence. Judge Conrad stated that Bellamy tied up Cleary “to give semblance of veracity that she was a victim. It is clear there was substantial planning involving disguise, timing and taking tape to give the appearance of tying her up.”

As leading providers of CCTV security, AlertSystems takes a keen interest in relevant industry news. A spokesperson from the company made the following statement upon hearing the news: “This example of robbery goes to show that in many criminal cases, there is much more going on than meets the eye. However, in this instance CCTV security contributed enormously towards the eventual conviction of the two criminals. Without high quality CCTV in place, the police are likely to have struggled to reach the conclusion that the robbery was staged.”
