Police hope that the people shown in the images released will hold information leading to the arrest of the thieves

Police in Newcastle investigating serial shoplifters have released CCTV images from Byker, Heaton and city centre stores, appealing for witnesses and help in identifying the perpetrators.

A string of thefts occurred over the winter in the east of Newcastle, and police are appealing for help in solving the crimes. Police hope that the people shown in the images released will hold information leading to the arrest of the thieves. The serial shoplifters targeted the Sainsbury’s store on Heaton Road and T J Hughes on Grainger Street. They also twice targeted the Wilko’s store on Shields Road. The thefts all took place between December 1st 2014 and January 15th 2015.

Police Inspector John McPhail, of Newcastle Area Command said: “We’re keen to identify the people pictured as they may have important information that can help with our inquiries into thefts which happened in Newcastle, Byker and Heaton between December 2014 and January this year.”

AlertSystems, a UK provider of CCTV surveillance systems, takes a keen interest in police appeals such as this. A spokesperson for the company provided the following statement: “Every day across the country we have thieves committing calculated attacks such as the ones in Newcastle this winter. It’s not just small, independent convenience stores which are targeted – large, well known high street supermarkets are targeted by these brazen shoplifters. Fortunately these three stores all had high quality CCTV security systems implemented, allowing the police to work to recover what was stolen. Unfortunately, it is possible any smaller stores in the area without CCTV in place may have suffered the same attacks, though there will be no proof or evidence allowing the owners to recoup their losses. At times like this it’s important to consider investing in high quality CCTV surveillance systems like the kind we provide at AlertSystems.”
