Summer School at the Goodlife Centre builds on the already popular schedule of DIY, woodwork, furniture restoration and upholstery classes

A Summer of Lifelong Learning in Waterloo

The Goodlife Centre, an independent learning space in Waterloo that specializes in short and snappy daytime, evening and weekend DIY classes, is providing a selection of five-day intensive courses to give a good grounding in a chosen hobby. The choice will be from two different carpentry courses (making either a bench or a table), woodcarving or upholstery, all under the careful guidance of skilled tutors. All creations can be taken home at the end of the course.

Designed to be diverse but practical, Summer School at the Goodlife Centre builds on the already popular schedule of DIY, woodwork, furniture restoration and upholstery classes that are regularly run in the bright and airy workspace just ten minutes from Waterloo, Borough and Southwark tube stations.

Carpentry, Wood carving and Upholstery Courses

Upholstery Summer School - This workshop is led by professional upholsterer, Jan Dodd. It is a special opportunity to turn a chair from frump to fabulous in five fun-filled consecutive days. Chairs will be transformed by removing the old fabric and stuffing, revamping the woodwork and fitting new upholstery. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate skilled learners.

Carpentry: Make a Table - This is a fabulous five day ‘Carpentry for beginners’ course which will provide an opportunity to learn an array of skills in a few wonderfully absorbing days. Using a mixture of traditional hand tools and modern drills and saws, experienced craftswoman Ruth Thomson will teach age-old techniques in carpentry. Tables will be constructed traditionally from seasoned pine and how to use and care for chisels, saws and planes will be taught. Ruth conveys her skillful practical experience with light-hearted humour.

Carpentry: Make a Bench - A workbench is a basic piece of furniture with a wood vice and useful for all sorts of craftwork in addition to working with wood. Lifelong woodworker, Andy Nicholl will lead this small workshop. As any good workbench is quite heavy, we will be designing one that can be hand crafted, using classic woodwork joints and part assembled at the Goodlife Centre so that the final construction can take place at home.

Woodcarving Summer School - This five-day course is a great way to dive into the timeless world of wood carving. The course will be taught by Stephen Scott, who is an award-winning City and Guilds trained carver. His teaching manner builds confidence and his enthusiasm is infectious. He is passionate about wood carving and a pleasure to learn from. The course has been designed for both beginners and intermediates.

The workshops are suitable for absolute beginners. The use of all tools and materials are included (except the upholstery workshop, where users should bring their own chair). Booking information can be found at
