There are more than two million Gout sufferers in the UK and that number is set to rise with the growing obesity epidemic facing our nation.

The launch of Gout Awareness Day in Britain by leading health expert Dr Michael Spira and gout sufferer Nick Wrathall on 21 May will not only highlight the problem but inform and help people suffering from this excruciatingly painful condition.

The launch, which coincides with the US Gout Awareness Day, will involve a webinar. It will also mark the official launch of a book by Dr Spira and Nick Wrathall called Goutbusters – How to fight gout and win. This gives the reader a unique blend of scientific knowledge about the condition and some practical help. As well as looking at the causes and types of gout, the book describes a comprehensive range of treatments from diet and exercise to prescribed and complementary medicines and new and emerging treatments.

Gout is a type of arthritis that affects around 2% of the population and is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in the elderly. An acute attack of gout is caused by uric acid accumulating in the blood and passing into a joint and forming uric acid crystal deposits.

Health professionals believe we are now in the midst of the third great gout epidemic of the Western world – the first two being during the times of the Roman and the Great British Empire - and this has been put down primarily to an increase in obesity.

Nick was inspired to publish the book after being successfully treated for gout by diet and obesity expert Dr Spira. He was in his late 30s when he woke up one morning and was horrified to discover his right leg, below the knee, was red and swollen to twice its normal size and every movement agonisingly painful.

“The worst part for me was the pain was so intense and I was limping so slowly on my way to the surgery that I was overtaken by an elderly lady who gave me a very condescending stare!” says Nick. A simple test confirmed that he was suffering from gout and put on medication.

Dr Spira has established a reputation as a leading diet and nutrition expert in the UK and has written five books on weight loss. He concedes that there was time when he was struggling with weight issues and could not find the right book to help him so decided to write one himself. He says Goutbusters is timely and will help promote awareness:

“Gout is one of those conditions that people tend to believe only happen to a small section of society who have a Henry V111 lifestyle, but that simply isn’t the case. It can happen to any one of us although there are health and genetic links that can be associated with gout,” says Dr Spira.

“I believe that people should have regular health checks, even from their twenties and a blood test for uric acid.”

Dr Spira and Nick Wrathall will be joined by American health professional Dr N.Lawrence Edwards who is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for the Gout & Uric Education Society.
