The man was seen arriving at the garage in a car that had recently been reported stolen

The reaction comes following a report issued by the Derbyshire Constabulary detailing the successful apprehension and subsequent arrest of a man accused of stealing a car and petrol from a garage in the area.

Police were able to carry out their investigation after they accessed the CCTV footage taken from the security system installed at the petrol garage. The man was seen arriving at the garage in a car that had recently been reported stolen before proceeding to drive away from the forecourt without paying for the petrol he had filled the vehicle up with.

The authorities subsequently released the footage to the public in the hope that they would be able to receive a positive identification of the suspect. Fortunately, they received a number of calls from people in the area and were able to arrest a 30 year old man from Ilkeston who has been subsequently questioned and bailed while inquiries continue.

The man is charged with the theft of a Mitsubishi Carisma from a lay-by in the nearby Station Road on the night of Saturday March 21st and a petrol theft in Leicester the following day. The car was later found abandoned at the Meridian Business Park in Braunstone.

A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in the installation of commercial security systems, has released a statement following the incident. “It is has been made clear once again the integral role that high-quality CCTV cameras play in the successful arrest of criminals all over the country.

“Police were able to easily access and distribute the footage, and as a result they were able to receive a positive identification of the suspect and move to arrest and charge him. It sends a clear message out to prospective criminals – when there is CCTV in operation, committing theft or a similar crime will result in apprehensions.

“We urge any commercial property who is still operating without CCTV security to seriously consider investing in order to provide a deterrent against these potentially damaging incidents.”
