Considered by many as a national treasure, the Orchestra have managed to increase the appeal of the ukulele

The reaction comes following a report in the York Press detailing the celebratory concert planned to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain this coming June.

Having formed in 1985, the Orchestra have been a fundamental part of the British string orchestra movement over the course of the past three decades. Consisting of eight musicians and having played in a number of the world’s most prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House and on some of the most popular formats in recent history such as Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, the stage is set for some of the country’s most popular musicians to commemorate almost a life’s body of work.

Considered by many as a national treasure, the Orchestra have managed to increase the appeal of the ukulele to a much greater audience over the course of recent years, and the concert – entitled 30 Plucking Years – on June 17th at the Grand Opera House in York is expected to be a sell-out affair.

A spokesperson for Fusion Bags, experts in specialist gig bags, has released a statement following the report: “It is fitting that one of the most unique and exciting orchestras in the country are being commemorated with a celebratory concert.

“The ukulele, until fairly recently, was seen by many as a gimmick instrument. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain have harnessed this perception and turned it into a genuine appreciation of high quality musicianship and stage presence – something that is reflected in their longevity.

“The professional ukulele players that purchase our specialist gig bags throughout the year certainly have a lot to owe to this octet of immensely talented ukulele ambassadors.”
