The legendary trumpet player Les Bull has passed away at his home in Stainton

The legendary trumpet player Les Bull has passed away at his home in Stainton, near Kendal. The musician was born and bred in Barrow and graduated in jazz from the famous Furness Jazz College Seven. In his younger years, Mr Bull worked as a professional musician in London. After a time, he returned to the North and formed the original Kendal Jazz Club with other musical friends. The renowned Kendal Pop Festivals were run by Mr Bull throughout his life.

During his time as a traditional jazz player he became friends with band leaders such as Alex Welch, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Ronny Scott. The jazz player was perhaps best known for the popular Les Bull Festival Jazz Band, which toured venues across the UK, recorded and album and even played in South Africa. After 17 years playing with the band, Mr Bull retired in December 2011. However, the band was resurrected in 2014.

Speaking about the reformation of the band in 2014, Mr Bull stated: “Eventually I thought the public had enjoyed their peace and quiet for long enough, so I asked an old chum and wizard keyboard player Pete Major if he fancied playing some jazz. As a traditional jazz band, we’re a dying breed. It’s just happy joyful music – it appeals to the older generation, but we have noticed a few younger faces in the audience, which is an encouraging sign.” A friend of Mr Major said this of him: “He was an exceptionally good musician and an extremely good band leader – often the two don’t necessarily go together.”

As providers of professional musician products, Fusion Bags always keeps its finger on the pulse of industry news. A spokesperson from the company responded the sad story. “It is always heart breaking to learn of significant losses to the musical community. Les Bull has been a jazz inspiration to many over the years and has contributed enormously to his local musical community. The Les Bull Festival Jazz band brought this inspiring genre of music to the masses and was loved by audiences the world over. This hugely respected musician will be sorely missed.”
