The aim is to get children active and healthy, by encouraging parents to send their children out to the park rather than plugging them into an iPad
Research commissioned by Muddy Puddles, a leading UK children’s outdoor clothing brand, in partnership with Your Baby Club, found 65% of respondents felt brands should be doing more to get children outdoors. 39% of parents also felt they struggle to find ideas of what to do outdoors with their children, with 19% fearing that their children spend too much time watching TV and on technology*. With recent results from the WHO** showing that nearly a quarter of British children under the age of 5 fall into the overweight/obese category, and the National Wildlife Federation showing that children are spending 50% more time indoors than 30 years ago, and 28 hours a week looking at screens, Muddy Puddles has decided it is about time to do something about this high profile issue.
Natasha Ascott, a busy mum of three, entrepreneur and Managing Director of Muddy Puddles, is spearheading a “Get Outdoors” campaign. The aim is to get children active and healthy, by encouraging parents to send their children out to the park rather than plugging them into an iPad. It also wants to encourage this culture to spread through nurseries and schools in the form of outdoor education. Maths lessons can be about estimating the number of leaves on a tree not just the number of dots on a piece of paper.
Alongside other great businesses that are turning their focus to this important issue, such as Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and the National Trust’s 50 Things to Do before you are 11 and ¾ campaign, Muddy Puddles is aiming to inspire families to Get Outdoors by becoming a publisher with purpose. They are creating a Muddy Days blog full of great ideas for what to do outdoors, expanding their calendar of free outdoor events and building even more partnerships with like-minded businesses. The team aspire to remind families that the greatest childhood memories are of climbing trees and rolling down hills or marching through the rain singing songs.
The team at Muddy Puddles passionately believe in the words of the great outdoor educationalist, David Polis, when he said, “Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.” If we can change British culture to be in line with Polis’ words then it will lead to the next generation of children with healthier bodies, better concentration and bigger imaginations
Muddy Puddles is also excited to be one of 10 companies shortlisted in the 'Grow’ category in the Virgin Media's Pitch to Rich campaign. Clearly Muddy Puddles’ vision has touched a chord with the public. Now in the final stages of the campaign, Natasha and the small team at Muddy Puddles have a challenge on their hands…to spread the word to as many families as possible and ask for their vote (by 16th June 2015) to win £250,000, so their dream of rolling out their "Get Outdoors" campaign can become a reality for children across the UK.
Everyone who votes has the chance to win £10,000 and to make a difference to children everywhere through the work Muddy Puddles aim to achieve.
Muddy Puddles has also launched a competition to encourage people to vote - the winner can win a luxury outdoor holiday for 10 for a week & a year's supply of waterproofs & a Go Ape Family Pass!

About Muddy Puddles
Muddy Puddles is a company built on the proposition there is no such thing as bad weather just the wrong kit. It is an on-line British business that prides itself on selling great value, high quality, technical outdoor clothes for children. Fit for all weathers, tested by kids (and the grown ups at Intertek) in snow, hail, sun and thunderstorms. Our vision is to transition from just selling great waterproofs to becoming synonymous with outdoor education. To be the business with the best outdoor kit who places playing and learning outdoors at the forefront of childhood again.
Muddy Puddles works continuously to develop excellent quality, practical outdoor clothes in unisex designs that can be passed from one sibling to the next. While at the same time developing partnerships with like-minded organisations like the Forestry Commission and Project Wild Thing to amplify a Get Outdoors movement across the UK.
Muddy Puddles want to encourage parents to send their children out to the park rather than plugging them into an iPad and to enable this culture to spread through nurseries and schools in the form of outdoor education where maths lesson can be about estimating the number of leaves on a tree not the number of dots on a piece of paper.
Our values: protective, practical and passionate
Protective: we create outdoor clothes that enable more kids to get outdoors and stay warm, dry and happy whatever the weather.
Practical: our clothes are made with parents and children in mind, from reflective strips and grippy soles to secret pockets and storm flaps.
Passionate: we firmly believe in the benefits of outdoor play and learning, and have created a series of free outdoor events and activity sheets to facilitate this for parents, teachers and children.
