A new way of keeping fit and healthy has arrived at Canary Wharf Tube station

The fitness BOOM arrives at Canary Wharf Tube station

With its pop-up studio on the station concourse – and classes that last just 30 minutes –
iHuman Fitness offers a new route to results

A new way of keeping fit and healthy has arrived at Canary Wharf Tube station – and, no, it doesn’t involve running up and down the escalators.

In early June, iHuman Fitness opened a pop-up fitness studio on the subterranean Jubilee Line concourse. It offers 30-minute classes, specially designed to make the best of busy people’s time as they achieve measurable fitness results. There are two different classes built on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – which iHuman Fitness brands as BOOM classes – and three types of yoga class. Personal training is a further option. iHuman Fitness charges no membership fee, the basic cost of a class is £15 and a choice of discounted booking packages is available. Bookings can be made online at, in person at the pop-up studio or by calling 077389 46817.

iHuman Fitness is a young company which over the past year has built a thriving fitness business at its headquarters in a quiet street in St John’s Wood in north-west London. The approach that iHuman Fitness takes is different from a conventional gym or fitness studio: the focus is on small, concentrated, personalised fitness classes for a maximum of six people, run by expert trainers.

How exactly, though, does just 30 minutes give you time to get fit?

The answer lies in the high-intensity interval training (HIIT) offered at BOOM classes, which are unique to iHuman Fitness. They pack a lot into half an hour by alternating short intervals of exercise at maximum intensity with longer intervals at low-to-moderate intensity. BOOM pushes you just briefly beyond the upper end of your aerobic exercise zone, so it trains both your anaerobic and aerobic systems and also increases your basic metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories for longer.

As NHS Choices says: "There is growing evidence to support that interval training might be as effective, if not more so, than longer, moderate-intensity aerobic workouts,” adding that: "The long-term health benefits from interval training are similar to those achieved from most types of longer-duration, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.”

iHuman Fitness’s founder, Mo El Kadey explains that: “Leading with BOOM classes, and complementing them with yoga and Pilates, iHuman Fitness has now established a firm niche in residential St John’s Wood and Maida Vale. We’ve built a loyal and enthusiastic base of clients there – 35 per cent of them have come to us via personal referrals from other clients. I think that says a lot about the quality and expertise of the training offered by iHuman Fitness. They really appreciate the fact that they are getting something different and personal from us – and that they are achieving the fitness results they are looking for.”

The Canary Wharf pop-up represents the first phase of iHuman Fitness’s expansion plans. The pop-up will be open throughout June, July and August and iHuman Fitness will soon be announcing a permanent location, offering a full range of BOOM, yoga and Pilates classes, within a few minutes’ walk of Canary Wharf station.

“The Canary Wharf pop-up gives iHuman Fitness fantastic exposure in one of London’s key business districts,” continues Mo El Kadey. ”After all, some 46 million people pass through the station every year! After a strong start in June, we’re looking forward to welcoming still more of them to the pop-up studio in July and August. Our classes are perfect if you’re off to the beach and want to tone up, or if you’re stuck in London when things get quieter over the summer and you want to make good use of your time. A 30-minute BOOM class will take up just 2% of your day, but you’ll find it energising – not exhausting – and it will produce results. iHuman Fitness is not just fitness for life – it’s fitness for your life.”

The 30-minute classes on offer at the iHuman Fitness pop-up in Canary Wharf Tube Station are:

● BOOM FFF (Free Form Fitness)
Boom FFF combines cardio- vascular training with strength training and builds on functional movement that reflects our daily routine in a dynamic way.
Ability level: Anyone

● BOOM plyometrics
In plyometrics, your muscles exert maximum force over short intervals. The aim is to increase speed, power, flexibility, balance, coordination and agility. BOOM plyometrics will simply rock your fitness!
Ability level: Moderate to high

● Yoga Flow EXPRESS
● Athletic Yoga
Both these classes balance an energetic flow – creating heat within the body – with the sweeter side of yoga.
They are about holding postures longer and allowing the muscles to relax, working on the deeper layers, intensifying the stretch and increasing vitality.

● Yoga Core Fusion
The creative dynamic flow in this class energises body and mind with a strong focus on strengthening the core. It tones and strengthens and increases flexibility, also enhancing your posture.
