A new way of keeping fit and healthy has arrived at Canary Wharf Tube station – and, no, it doesn’t involve running up and down the escalators.
In early June, iHuman Fitness opened a pop-up fitness studio on the subterranean Jubilee Line concourse. It offers 30-minute classes, specially designed to make the best of busy people’s time as they achieve measurable fitness results. There are two different classes built on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – which iHuman Fitness brands as BOOM classes – and three types of yoga class. iHuman Fitness is a young company which over the past year has built a thriving fitness business at its headquarters in a quiet street in St John’s Wood in north-west London. The approach that iHuman Fitness takes is different from a conventional gym or fitness studio: the focus is on small, concentrated, personalised fitness classes for a maximum of six people, run by expert trainers.
How exactly, though, does just 30 minutes give you time to get fit?
The answer lies in the high-intensity interval training (HIIT) offered at BOOM classes, which are unique to iHuman Fitness. They pack a lot into half an hour by alternating short intervals of exercise at maximum intensity with longer intervals at low-to-moderate intensity. BOOM pushes you just briefly beyond the upper end of your aerobic exercise zone, so it trains both your anaerobic and aerobic systems and also increases your basic metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories for longer.

● Athletic Yoga
Both these classes balance an energetic flow – creating heat within the body – with the sweeter side of yoga.
They are about holding postures longer and allowing the muscles to relax, working on the deeper layers, intensifying the stretch and increasing vitality.
