Ipswich Borough Council have approved a proposal for a new cinema, gym, new shops, bars and restaurants at the Buttermarket centre which opened in 1992. A spokesperson from Retail Smart provides a statement.
Capital & Regional and Drum Property Group bought the centre in March for £9.2 million and it is hoped the multiplex will attract a higher number of visitors to the town at night. Six new restaurants and bars will be built on the ground floor.
There will also be seven more shops in the building, which had planning permission granted in 2012 only for the Vue chain to ditch the scheme for a nine-screen cinema. However, setbacks are not expected this time around.
Hugh Scott-Barrett, chief executive of Capital and Regional, said: “We believe our proposals will revitalise not just Buttermarket shopping centre but Ipswich town centre as a whole by introducing a tailored mix of retail and leisure facilities. We have a real opportunity to develop Buttermarket into a vibrant shopping centre everyone can be proud of.”
A spokesperson for Retail Smart, who offer store planning as part of their services in the UK, said: “It has been a long time coming, but at last this multiplex has the opportunity to thrive and offer residents several options across the day and night. The 16-screen cinema gives residents a wide range of choice so they can watch an appealing film at a time which suits them.
