Top tips to get ready for the holiday drive
With the countdown to the school holidays underway, Europcar, the leader in car hire services in Europe, is backing the British public in their quest to get their car ready for the summer holiday drive. Whether it’s driving the whole family, including gran, the dog and the children’s collection of scooters, skate boards and toys to a campsite or a romantic trip to a beach hut on the coast, it’s an annual challenge for holidaymakers to get the car packed for a long journey.
It’s worth considering first if the usual family car is up to the job. The city compact may be great for getting around town, but when it comes to taking the whole family away it could be a tight squeeze. And the extra miles of a long holiday journey will add to the wear and tear on the family car, potentially impacting on its value when it comes to selling it.
Europcar recommends hiring a car that is fit for purpose. Not only will this ensure that there’s room for all the luggage and other paraphernalia that the family need. Whatever the choice of car, holidaymakers need to make sure all the luggage – and passengers – are safely loaded. If a roof rack is used, make sure it’s securely fastened and any items are strapped down. It’s also important to check that items inside the car are not going to cause harm to passengers in the case of sudden braking, and nothing is blocking the driver’s view out of the rear windows.
It may take a couple of practices to fit everything in the car, but it’s worth having a play around to see which items fit best where. And think about having easy access to bags with essentials, such as mobile phones and money for tolls. Passengers will also be much happier and comfortable if they are not drowning amongst the luggage.
Once the car is packed it’s also worth making sure that the driver and passengers are ready. • For items being packed inside the car, lighter items stored on top of the bulkier baggage should be secured so they don't fly forward in the case of a sudden stop
• Don't pile items up to the roof – make sure the driver can see out of the rear window
• Keep essential items (drinks, snacks, change of clothes, etc) within easy reach
• Don't forget to take advantage of spaces under the seats
• Think about where everyone sits too - passengers who are prone to carsickness need to be able to see out of the front window
