47% of the over 50s believe they will use Facebook more as they grow older and that they rate Twitter and Instagram as social media losers.
Groundbreaking research from Silversurfers.com reveals that 47% of the over 50s believe they will use Facebook more as they grow older and that they rate Twitter and Instagram as social media losers.
Contrary to popular opinion, social media clearly have an important role to play for us as we get older. Whilst social media may not be contributing to the personal skills of younger people, the over 50s recognise that as they grow older and less physically mobile, social media will play a key role in keeping in touch with friends and family.
• 92% of internet savvy over 50s use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family and 48% use it to share updates and photos
• 81% say they check Facebook more than once a day
• 37% stating that they often check what friends are up to on Facebook
• This trend started years ago with 35% having joined Facebook before 2010.
Martin Lock, CEO of Silversurfers.com, states, “Being comfortable using Facebook will help older people stay connected to their families and friends and may help alleviate loneliness in later years.”
Facebook is by far the most popular social media for the over 50s
• 35% of over 50s can’t be bothered with social media apart from Facebook.
• Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Google+ were low in the social media popularity stakes with only 25% using Google+, 19% Twitter and 9% Pinterest and Instagram.
• 38% of people surveyed visited the Silversurfers.com Facebook page at least once a day with 12% visiting at least twice a day.
Silversurfers.com’s research revealed the most popular type of Facebook posts for the over 50s are nostalgia, human interest, photo of the day and handy tips. The most popular types of online editorial are special interest articles (such as getting the best from your pension and minimising inheritance tax, to gardening and cookery tips). 38% of people surveyed visited the Silversurfers.com Facebook page at least once a day with 12% visiting at least twice a day.
Martin Lock, CEO of Silversurfers, continues, “We were stunned at the popularity of Facebook. Over 3,000 people completed our survey and the message is clear: Facebook is King of social media for the over 50s. They don’t rate other social media.
“ Our research also revealed that the over 50s use Facebook to check out old flames and show off!”
• 35% use Facebook to find old friends
• 16% use Facebook to check out old partners
• 7% use Facebook to meet new people
Whilst the over 50s like to look up old flames they are mostly just after friendship with a quarter (24%) meeting up with old friends they haven’t seen for years. This has led to renewing the friendship in majority of cases.
The main reason the over 50s look up old partners (16%) is to see how old partners look now and 16% also like to upload a selfie. So perhaps they want to show their old partners how well they have aged but interestingly, none of them seem to go back to reignite the old flames, preferring to look but not touch!
20% of canny over 50s will also use Facebook to help sell their unwanted stuff and 12% say they are not averse to getting a bit of help with a crossword clue!
And if they have lost their puss or their pooch they go to Facebook for help. 21% stated they used Facebook to find a lost pet.
Survey Methodology: 3012 respondents completed Silversurfers.com online survey.
