Choreographer Matt Flint and business partner Tom Shilcock, a professional dancer, are helping give back to the dance community by investing in young dancers across the UK.
Matt, who was the winner of BBC1’s So You Think You Can Dance in 2011 is now established as one of the UK’s top choreographers and if you caught the opening number in ‘Movie week’ on Strictly Come Dancing you would have seen Matt’s work. He’s also one half of Can You Dance? A dance convention which tours the UK and has grown from one venue to seven over the last 4 years. His business partner Tom, is one of the leading commercial dancers in the UK and has worked with Rita Ora, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna & Gary Barlow to name a few and together they are on a mission to help as many young dancers as they can.
“We want to offer opportunities to young dancers that they wouldn’t usually have. By bringing our conventions to them they get the top choreographers as their teachers for the day, something that only usually happens if you are in London” said Tom. Alongside that, they have teamed up with leading dance colleges. Last year alone, 7 scholarships to top colleges - worth over 250,000 pounds were handed out at the conventions, giving people the chance to train professionally for free.
And it’s not just older students being given fantastic chances, Matt & Tom recently launched their quest to find ten CYD? Dance Stars. Each dance star wins 100 pounds towards dance classes as well as merchandise from CYD? and their sponsor Capezio and tickets to one of the conventions. “The talent in the UK is phenomenal and some of these kids just do not get given the chances, it’s about believing in them and hopefully making a difference” said Matt.
Next year Can You Dance? is visiting seven venues including Worcester, Kent, Norwich, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Nottingham & Leeds and tickets can be bought through their website
